MARC CHAGALL

Marc Chagall (Yiddish: מאַרק שאַגאַל; Russian: Марк Захарович Шагал), born Moïshe Zakharovich Shagalov (Russian: Мойша Захарович Шагалов) was a Jewish artist, born on 7th July, 1887 in Vitebsk, Belorus.

Some of his works contain apparently Christian motifs, such as the Crucified Christ. He is said to have seen in the crucifixion an image of the "suffering Jew".

However, some of his work appears in explicitly Christian contexts, such as the stained glass windows in the parish church of Tudeley, Kent, the only parish church with a complete set of Chagall stained glass.
