FINNISH INDEPENDENCE DAY

Today Finland celebrates its independence from Russia, declared on December 6th, 1917, following the Russian Revolution. Finland has fought three wars to preserve that independence.

The Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were not so fortunate. They all suffered both Nazi occupation and 50 years or so of Soviet occupation.

These photos were taken in Riga on Latvia's 90th Independence Day - November 18th, 2008.
