CIVIL RIGHTS FOR JEWS IN FINLAND

On January 12th, 1918 Finland passed the "Mosaic Confessors" law, granting Finnish Jews full civil rights as citizens of the newly independent Republic of Finland.

During the 700 hundred years when Finland was part of the kingdom of Sweden (until 1809), Jews were prohibited from settling in Sweden-Finland. When Russia conquered Finland in 1809 Jews who had served in the Russian army were permitted to settle in Finland, thus creating the basis for a Jewish community in the country.
