Fredrik Pacius, the "father of Finnish music", a pupil of Louis Spohr, was born in Hamburg, Germany as Friedrich Pacius on March 19th, 1809. He died in Helsinki on January 8th, 1891.
He wrote the music of the first Finnish opera Kung Karls Jakt (King Charles' Hunt) in 1852.
His setting of Runeberg's VĂ¥rt Land (Our Land) is the Finnish national anthem. The Estonian national anthem Mu isamaa (My Fatherland) is set to the same music.
