In 1709, exactly three hundred years ago today, at the Battle of Poltava, the most famous battle of the Great Northern War, Peter I (Peter the Great) of Russia defeated Charles XII of Sweden and effectively ended Sweden's role as a major European power.
In 1809, exactly one hundred years later, Russia conquered Finland, effectively dividing Sweden into two.
In 1917 Finland gained its independence from Russia.
